Test for the proper functioning of an autoclave

Description of the BOWIE + DICK TEST

The Bowie and dick test verifies the correct penetration of saturated steam in the porous loads subjected to the class B cycle and in the enveloped packs subjected to cycles in class S.

It is also able to check the presence, the quality of the steam, the temperature and the exposure time.

Characteristics and composition of the package

The Bowie Dick Test Pack is as follows:

an external sheet of printed medical paper with a chemical indicator for vapor cycles.
Inside the pack is composed of 2 filtering layers made with virgin medical grade paper, at the center of which is positioned the chemical indicator for the BD test, all stopped by a strapping that guarantees a constant compactness to the entire internal pack , allowing the correct permeation of the vapor through the pores of the paper itself and not from the potential cracks that would form between the individual sheets that compose it.
All the material is virgin and suitable for medical use.

The internal sheet has characteristics peculiar to its own composition:
the dimensions are cm. 12.5x23, and is divided into two parts.

A properly used for the specific daily test of Bowie Dick is plasticized, showing the chemical indicator sensitive to temperature, time and saturated steam; the other half of the aforementioned sheet is occupied by the storage card showing the spaces suitable for completion by the operator.

The advantages resulting from the above described are easily deducible:
the sheet is folded up on itself, with the exact dimensions of the package.
Once the test has been carried out, the package is opened and the sheet is extracted, which once extended for the whole of its length, allows an immediate verification of the result, and the easy and complete compilation of the spaces for storage data.

How to take the Bowie & Dick test

The test must be carried out daily when the autoclave is switched on by means of a pack in the canvas that has the dimensions and characteristics required by current regulations, at the center of which the BOWIE DICK test sheet is placed.
The methods of execution of the test are: 210 seconds at a temperature of 134 degrees Celsius. (3.5 minutes x 134 degrees C).
Produced with high quality medical paper.

Failed test:
Uneven color indicates the presence of air bubbles or other problems with the autoclave.
Repeat the test and / or request the intervention of the technician.

Test carried out correctly:
The uniform black color shows a complete and regular penetration of saturated steam, this means normal operation of the autoclave and that the test has been carried out successfully.
